Menace To Humans And Pets - Fleas

Fleas transmit several diseases, such as typhus, plague, and cat-scratch disease. In the United States, the most common domestic flea can be found on both cats and dogs.

Identifying Characteristics

An Adult flea is a small, dark-colored, wingless insect that is flattened from side to side. The most commonly encountered flea is the cat flea. It has an incredibly tough body. It is difficult to kill a flea just by squeezing between the fingers.

What Do Fleas Eat?

The adult flea feeds on a variety of hosts, including cats, dogs, rodents, foxes, opossums and humans.

Where Do They Hide?

Fleas larvae like to hide in dark areas close to the ground, like carpets. Eggs are commonly found on or near pet’s resting areas. Adults prefer to live on the host animal.

How Can Fleas Harm Us?

In addition to their annoying, itchy bites, they also spread diseases by serving as a vector for disease producing organisms. They transmit diseases to both people and pets such as dermatitis, murine typhus, plague and tapeworm.
